Japanese Kimono Pattern

”Wagara”

In Japan, there are traditional patterns used in kimono, pottery, and interiors since ancient times.

Traditional Japanese patterns are called ”Wagara”.

Wagara are wonderful in terms of design and are highly evaluated by the world.

Wagara have a long history and were introduced from the continent in the 8th century.  At first, I was greatly influenced by Chinese culture such as pine, bamboo and plum, dragon, and phoenix.  From around the 9th century, Japanese design became established among aristocrats.

In the first place, Wagara are designed in which patterns are patterned and arranged in a disciplined manner.

The pattern contains prayers and thoughts such as huge harvest and Safety of one’s family.  Among them, the pattern with auspicious patterns is called “Kishomonyo”.

 It is used for kimono and traditional crafts.  Also, it is often used in celebrations such as New Year’s and weddings.

wagara has hundreds of patterns. We will introduce it in this article.
